The Reader's Gift
We should never try to draw on emotional credit to which our story is not entitled.…An emotional response from the reader is a precise thing - it’s the reader’s gift to us.

Wise advice for any writer.

Opening lines

Writing an opening line is like putting down on paper 'two plus two equals five.' The rest of the book attempts to prove that equation.

Hijacking your eyes

This doesn't just apply to film makers. I think it's a goal for many writers, including myself, to craft a connection between the observer and story, such as the one below.

These Are The Days
These are the days of the open hand
They will not be the last
Look around now
These are the days of the beggars and the choosers

This is the year of the hungry man
Whose place is in the past
Hand in hand with ignorance
And legitimate excuses

The rich declare themselves poor
And most of us are not sure
If we have too much
But we'll take our chances

Say, I say twenty years and a day
but nothing change
the human race
found some other god
and walked into the flame

It's hard to love, there's so much to hate
Hanging on to hope
When there is no hope to speak of
And the wounded skies above say it's much too late
Well maybe we should all be praying for time

These are the days of the empty hand
Oh you hold on to what you can
And charity is a coat you wear twice a year

This is the year of the guilty man
Your television takes a stand
And you find that what was over there is over here

So you scream from behind your door
Say what's mine is mine and not yours
I may have too much but I'll take my chances

Say, I say twenty years and a day
but nothing change
the human race
found some other god
and walked into the flame

It's hard to love, Jesus there's so much to hate
Hanging on to hope when there is no hope to speak of
And the wounded skies above say it's much too late
So maybe we should all be praying for time

A letter from Isaac

Let us never forget the beauty held within a library.

"Dear boys and girls.
Congratulations on the new library, because it isn't just a library. It is a space ship that will take you to the farthest reaches of the Universe, a time machine that will take you to the far past and the far future, a teacher that knows more than any human being, a friend that will amuse you and console you ...
... and most of all, a gateway, to a better and happier and more useful life."

Isaac Asimov: 16th March 1971

Craft

Craft: an activity involving skill in making things.

The attention to detail and the hidden patience behind the veil is truly inspiring.
